Residential Windows: Looking Good
Finding appropriate residential windows for your home depends
largely on where you live. There are three different zones in
America that generally require different window qualities. These
window qualities are based on whether the home is largely heated,
cooled, or both.
Residents
in the first zone, which is comprised of states in the northern
part of the country, are generally heated for much of the year
and seldom require much air-conditioning. For these homes, the
best types of residential windows to buy are ones that are either
double- or triple-paned. This means that a window has multiple
panes of glass that trap insulating gas such as argon in between
them. This gas is less conductive than regular air and thus keeps
cold air where it belongs—outside. Windows in the colder
climates are also recommended to be made out of either fiberglass
or vinyl, because both materials are also good insulators.
Homes in the second, or centrally located zone, require both
heating and cooling. These homes will also need windows made out
of multiple panes, but will also require windows that have a low-E
coating. This coating is effective in blocking the sun’s
rays and thus diminishing solar heat transfer into the home. Again,
homes in the central zone generally need to be made out of fiberglass
or vinyl.
Residential homes in the third, or southern zone, will generally
require air-conditioning for much of the year. These homes definitely
need windows with a low-e coating, but generally don’t require
the level of insulation provide by double- or triple-panes. Windows
in this part of the country are often made out of aluminum, which
doesn’t insulate as well as fiberglass or vinyl
